The dimensions of a cot

The centerpiece of the child's room, the cot is chosen with care a few months before the baby arrives. This bed that will evolve at your child's pace so that he feels good and safe.

At Rêves de Libellule, we not only offer you different sizes of cots but also mattresses adapted to them (several materials are available: organic cotton, bamboo, special ventilation foam, etc.). From the cradle to the cot to the ultra-scalable baby bed, discover all our ranges of baby beds and make the best choice for your future child!

The cradle or the bassinet for baby

Up to around 6 months

The cradle and bassinet, designed for newborns, adapt perfectly to the small size of your babies during their first months.

Note, however, that this type of bedding can become dangerous when your babies start to sit up (around 6 months).

At this age, you have to switch to another type of bed.

For practicality, we advise you to choose a model on wheels , to move your baby more easily from one room to another.

Cribs with bars

Classic crib (60X120cm)

Up to about 3 years old.

You can perfectly sleep your baby in a classic crib from birth.

Indeed, most cots have box springs adjustable in height, which prevents parents from having to bend down too much for the first 4 months.

The convertible bed is designed to relieve parents' backs with its ergonomic function. When your child is independent enough to get in and out of his bed on his own (around 3 years old) and he starts to climb the bars to your great dismay, you should switch to the "child's bed".

Scalable cot (70X140cm)

Up to around 6-8 years old.

The convertible baby cot owes its name to the fact that it can be transformed into a junior bed with a few modifications. Going from a baby bed to a child's bed empowers and even if it involves some changes, your little one will be all the more proud of it.

Although this type of bed is more expensive to buy, tell yourself that it is a real investment since it will accompany your child for several years. Say yes to sustainable solutions!

What criteria to choose the mattress of your cot?

  1. Dimensions: Unlike a child or an adult, the baby needs soft sleeping comfort: we are talking about foam weight between 18 to 38kg /m3 against 35 to 55 kg/m3 for an adult. The dimensions of the mattress must therefore be adapted to those of the bed, to avoid any risk of suffocation. For a children's bed, the dimensions of a mattress are 60x120 cm or 70x140 cm. The thickness must be between 12 and 15 cm in accordance with NF safety standards. It must also meet the EN 597-1 fire standard.
  2. Material: Latex, memory foam, with a natural mattress core (enriched with bamboo fiber, for example), in organic cotton... Choose the material that best suits your desires... When making your choice, it is strongly recommended to opt for a ticking (visible part of the mattress) made of viscose of bamboo with perfect antibacterial and absorbent properties, thus facilitating the evacuation of perspiration. The interior can be foam surrounded by a layer of wadding. Light, resistant and with shape memory, this material guarantees your child's comfort.
  3. Thickness: The thickness of the mattress guarantees long-lasting comfort. For a quality product, count about 12 cm thick. In order to guarantee good ventilation of the mattress and regulate your baby's temperature as well as possible, the air must circulate well. Parents also tend to favor natural anti-bacterial/mite-resistant foams and fabrics, as well as removable mattress covers (for easier and more efficient washing). High-end products, especially cashmere fabric, are also very popular with mothers. To guarantee the quality of the products, it is advisable to favor eco-designed French-made products that comply with standards such as CERTIPUR® and OEKOTEX®.

Our advice:

  1. Choose a sturdy bed. Pay attention to the quality of the wood and the paint (guaranteed in water, without harmful solvents, which must not flake off even if the baby starts to chew on it), the fixing of the bars and panels... For questions of safety and comfort, it is better to invest in quality the first time... We will therefore prefer a French or European manufacturer, the standards being stricter than internationally.
  2. The bedroom must be well insulated and the temperature should stay around 19°C.
  3. If you are worried that your baby will be lost in a cot, there are bed reducers (most often 3 rolls) which create a space the size of the very first months, thus reminding the baby of its maternal cocoon.
  4. Sheets, duvets, blankets and cushions are to be avoided until the age of 2 years.
  5. Soft toys should not be put in the baby's bed to avoid the risk of suffocation

The first bed is an important investment for the family, therefore an ideal gift (for example collective) which will serve quickly and for several years. Give baby a better nights sleep.
