Better understanding of baby sleep

All new parents know that the first few months are the hardest. One of the reasons: the fact that the child wakes up regularly at night.

In fact, infant sleep is not the same as that of a child or an adult.

Rest assured: this period is not only temporary and, by trying to understand your baby's sleep, you will have all the keys to live this moment in complete serenity.

Infant sleep (up to 2 months)

In his first weeks of life, your cherub does not distinguish the day/night cycle.

He sleeps so per period quite short (a few hours only). Between each time of sleep, he wakes up to eat or starts to wake up.

When it's in the middle of the day, it's fine, but when it's in the middle of the night, it's more difficult to manage for the parent who takes care of it (usually the woman thanks to maternity leave).

You only have a few weeks to go and then it should be better. During this period, you are forced to live at the pace of your young child.

Baby sleep from 3 months to 6 months

From 3 months, your toddler begins to differentiate between day and night. It is therefore from this moment that some children are said to be sleeping through the night.

Thus, nocturnal sleep tends to lengthen and you can take advantage of this to give your baby a space just for him. During this period, his sleep time is 15 hours a day on average. So, rest assured if your baby sleeps a lot. This is completely normal.

The baby’s sleep after 6 months

After 6 months, your little one's waking phases tend to get longer. As a general rule, he still sleeps 4 hours on average during the day and sleeps through the night (between 9 and 11 hours of sleep).

At this time, he can sometimes have trouble to fall asleep. The teeth start to grow and hurt. The first nightmares also begin at this time. So it's not uncommon for him to wake up screaming in the middle of the night. In addition, specialists also speak of separation anxiety (around the 8th month) which is characterized by difficulty falling asleep alone in bed, in their room.

As parents, your role is to reassure him, but without brooding him too much in order to help him sleep alone. If he wakes up in the middle of the night, wait to see if he goes back to sleep to go see him and don't prolong the evening cuddles longer than necessary.

To know : at this age, baby does not yet have tantrums. So, if he cries, it's for a very specific reason.

Help: my baby does not sleep! What to do?

A baby who does not sleep when he is sick is completely normal. In this case, quickly make an appointment with your pediatrician or your doctor who will give you medication to allow him to fall asleep easily and not be woken up in the middle of the night. The teeth are also often the cause of sleep-related difficulties.

However, if your child does not sleep through the night after 7/8 months or if the nap is difficult, you should discuss it with your pediatrician.

But also question yourself and ask yourself if his environment is conducive to peaceful sleep. Is his room noisy? Is it too hot or too cold? What do you feed him before going to bed?

Here are some questions to ask yourself.
