Every woman says it: being pregnant is a real blessing. It is the moment when the body changes to welcome a fetus that will grow for 9 months. This is a unique life experience.

To ensure that everything runs smoothly during this important period, you will need to 3 pregnancy ultrasounds.

What can you expect? We tell you everything.

1st trimester ultrasound

Your doctor will recommend that you perform this first pregnancy ultrasound between 12e and 13eweek of amenorrhea (absence of a rule). Called mini-morphology ultrasoundWe are then at the end of the 3rd centurye month of pregnancy. This examination lasts about 20 minutes and is usually performed abdominally. If necessary, the gynaecologist will also carry out a vaginal examination of the cervix.

This ultrasound is one of the most moving, because you will be able to hear your baby's heartbeat for the first time. The doctor will guide you to also see his hands and feet.

During this important medical appointment, the specialist dates the pregnancy and checks that there are no abnormalities in the growth of the fetus. To do this, he takes various measurements and observes the proper formation of bones and organs.

It is also at this time that we can offer you a screening for trisomy 21

2nd Trimester Ultrasound

We are towards the 6emonth of pregnancy and you will need to return to your doctor (between 22eand the 24eweek of amenorrhea) for morphological ultrasound. Again, it will take about 20 minutes and your gynaecologist will perform an abdominal and vaginal examination (to examine the cervix).

Obviously, the fetus will have grown well and you will be able to observe the development of one's body.

Here again, the doctor is responsible for measure bones and organs. It also verifies the baby's heart rate as well as location and appearance of the placenta. Not to mention the toddler mobility.

It is also at this point that we can identify more precisely the gender of your unborn child.

3rd Trimester Ultrasound

The due date is approaching. We are then between the 32eand the 34eweek of amenorrhea.

This last ultrasound takes place in the same way as the previous ones (about 20 minutes and exploration through the abdominal and vaginal channels).

This time, since the baby will have grown a lot, it will be more difficult to identify the different parts of his body. Don't worry: the doctor is there to tell you more.

The latter takes the opportunity to take final measurements while observing the baby's position (a data that will be used during the delivery).

Optional: dating ultrasound

Although the 3 previous ultrasounds are recommended by the French Social Security, more and more doctors are recommending a ultrasound dating.

This is carried out by medical opinion from the 5eweek of amenorrhea

Done vaginally and lasting about 10 minutes, it is used to validate your pregnancy. But also to check that the early stages of pregnancy are taking place in the best conditions so as not to disrupt the growth of your child.

In any case, you will see that this adventure is a magical moment. Feeling your baby growing in your belly and kicking sometimes is a unique experience (making some dads jealous).
